For most of my life, I was a music and foreign language teacher. I was also a television teacher/writer for a Spanish video series. I wrote 35 songbooks, resource books, and short plays in five languages, which are published by McGraw-Hill and Dolo Publications. These materials are still widely used for teaching languages through music, art and theater. Several animated and live action songs are available on YouTube under my name.
But now, embracing the third third of my life, I finally have the opportunity to cultivate art and pottery. I Iove the way clay molds itself in front of me, whether on the pottery wheel or hand-sculpted. I feel like the clay has a life inside it, and through me, it changes into the form it wants to have. Ceramics has taught me to look at all art anew, to marvel at colors, patterns, lines, shapes and nuances in nature that I didn't notice before.
I would say that my style is earthly. It is raw, largely intuitive, and it is obvious that I delight in clay's organic power and the beauty of all living things. Regarding clay, my hands exist mainly and guide it’s natural desires, and to honor its form in a cacophony of vibrant colors.
A lot of my ceramics is yard art; life-like opossums, fanciful hedgehogs, cats, colorful birds, totems. I delight at the synchronicity of gardens and small sculptures peeking out from plants and bushes .
Because you never know exactly what is going to happen in a kiln, ceramicists say that every time you open one to see the results of your glaze fire, it's like Christmas. (I agree, but sometimes, unfortunately, it's also like Halloween!) Clay and glazes, as organic materials, have their own wonderful reactions and consequences, that the artist cannot completely control.
I hope that you enjoy the photos of my work, and please know that if the art of making ceramics is something you've always wanted to try, do it! It's never too late!
